4. Bob Backlund vs. Antonio Inoki ((INOKI WINS THE WWF TITLE! – New Japan 11/30/79)

It was long thought by many fans that Inoki wasn't supposed to win this match, but New Japan and Inoki pulled a doublecross on
Backlund and the ref counted 3 when Backlund was expecting to kick out at 2. Needless to say Backlund appeared to be VERY UPSET.
Turns out though, that the match was specifically booked this way, and that Backlund played his part well. Even to the point of selling
the match as a screw job for YEARS afterward.)

5. Bob Backlund v. Antonio Inoki (New Japan 12/6/79 - REMATCH from #2. The Japanese screw job seemingly continues, as
Backlund pins Inoki, but doesn’t win the titie. The match was made to look like Inoki was suppposed to drop the title back to Backlund but
the match would then appear as if it were RETROACTIVELY declared a non-title match, and Inoki is allowed to keep
the title. Inoki eventually gives the title back before Bob returns to America. In exchange, Inoki was
promised a title match at Madison Square Garden, but wound up facing the Iron Sheik with Inoki billed as the "World Martial Arts Champion". I'm sure Inoki wasn't happy about that part.

WWF World Title. The belt had been held up after Backlund lost the belt to Antonio Inoki in a very
controversial finish. Inoki returned the belt to Backlund before returning to the US on the condition that he get a shot at the title at MSG. MSG 12/17/79)

take verbal shots at each other. Backlund takes Flair to task for never having defended the NWA World Title at Madison Square Garden and Ric Flair rejects Backlund’s offer of a handshake. This was a truly
historic meeting, as both men were regarded as the best wrestlers working at the time, and everyone
watching the sport was interested in seeing just who would win in a match between the two. Sadly
enough, their match at the Omni in Atlanta was either never recorded, or the recording was never

This tape chronicles Bob Backlund's many matches in the Land of the Rising Sun.  Included are virtually the

entire history of the Backlund v. Inoki series including the match where Inoki won the WWWF title! You also
will see 2 of Backlunds matches from his time with the UWFi "shoot" promotion, as well as a RARE match
against the AMERICAN DREAM Dusty Rhodes!  The first 4 matches are from the series that Backlund

and Inoki had during Backlunds reign as WWF champion.  Although these would be considered EXTREMELY
boring by today's standards, WRESTLING fans of this era will remember these as some FANTASTIC scientific
contests between the two.
